The
columns of the entrance passage were fluted in imitation of
the reed bundles used to frame ordinary buildings. These were
the earliest columns to be made out of stone and it is evident
that the builders were not entirely confident that they would
do the job. At least that is the accepted explanation of the
fact that they were attached to the sides of the corridor
by by short walls. The excavator suggests that statues of
the pharaohs may have occupied the alcoves these created.
