There are a number of smaller towns on Malta, each dominated by its large Renaissance or Baroque Church and surrounded by fields. Space is at a premium on the large island but it is surprising how rural much of it still feels.

Naxxar. Victory Day
The biggest event of the year is Victory Day (September 8), which celebrates the defeat of the Turks in 1565 and the lifting of the Great Seige. It coincides with the Feast of the Nativity of Saint Mary which is held in Naxxar, Senglea and Xaghra on Gozo. We attended the festivities at Naxxar and had a wonderful time.

Mdina

Before the Knights made Valletta their headquarters, Mdina had been the capital of the island. Automobile traffic is virtually banned from its narrow, medieval streets—it is known as the “Silent City.” Perched atop its hill and surrounded by massive battlements, the city commands superb views of the entire island.
