The
island of Gozo is a short ferry trip from Malta but
is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the
larger island. The economy is mainly agricultural
rather than trade and tourism and the countryside
is relatively unspoiled. As on Malta, the towns are
dominated by their enormous Baroque churches including
that of Saint John at Xewkija. Its dome is not as
broad as the one in Mosta but the locals glad to point
out that it is higher and has a larger capacity than
its rival.

Gozo
supported a thriving community in prehistoric times too
and the temple complex at Ggantija is one of the finest.
Its walls are huge and remarkably well-preserved.

Blue Grotto
The
Blue Grotto one of a number of caves on the south coast
of the island and a few of us took one of the small
boat tours to visit them.
