The Dome of the Church of Saint Mary |
|
|
| The
Church of Saint Mary in the town of Mosta is noted for
its magnificent dome— second only to
the Pantheon in Rome in its span. In 1942, while 300
people were in the church praying, a number of German
bombs struck the dome. Two bounced off and the third,
although it crashed through to the floor in front of
the altar, did not explode. The scar can be seen at
about 7 o'clock in the right-hand photo. |

|
| The
temple complex at Tarxien is perhaps the most complex
and contains some of the finest artwork, including detailed
reliefs carvings such as the running spirals found on
the altar (bottom left) and the partially preserved
larger-than-life statue of the goddess, a replica of which
stands in the spot occupied by the original (bottom
right). |

|
|
| Marsxlokk
is a fishing village at the eastern end of the island.
It is noted for its brightly painted fishing boats, known
as luzzus, decorated with the eye of Isis to
ward off evil and to look for fish. The town also has
a bustling market dealing in traditional products along
with the standard tourist fare. |
