From
Hexham we headed south through Durham to York lingering at Durham
and dawdling through the North Yorkshire Moors. The remains of the
old Cistercian Abbey at Rievaulx, shut down by Henry VIII, were
particularly impressive. We stayed for several days by the Monkgate,
which leads ito the old town of York. The city had started as a
major Roman military base and it was here that Contantine the Great
was proclaimed emperor in AD 306. Roman remains along with those
of the subsequent Viking city of Jorvik can still be seen but the
most impressive monument is the medieval Minster which dominates
the town.
The
drive through the Yorkshire Dales was moist but rewarding with stops
at Fountains Abbey and Wensleydale on our way to the Lake District
in Cumbria.
