We walked a substantial section of the Wall, including its most dramatic stretches, from Walltown Crags to Stell Rigg— about 10 miles altogether. The weather was fine and the scenery, truly spectacular. There were quite a number of monuments to see along the way— turrets, milecastles and the sycamore tree made famous by its appearance in the Kevin Costner version of Robin Hood. We spent the better part of two days covering this section but were rewarded by the remains of two huge Roman forts, at Housesteads and Vindolanda.
