14. The Karpas Peninsula

The Karpas Peninsula is one of the very few relatively unspoiled areas left on the island of Cyprus—so far at least. It is noted for its broad, sandy beaches, which provide some of the few remaining nesting grounds for sea turtles in the whole Mediterranean, as well a low rolling hills that are home to herds of wild donkeys.

The Oasis Hotel

We stayed at the Oasis Hotel next to the ruined church of Ayios Philon on the north coast. The small bay had once been the site of a Roman port and a good stretch of the original breakwater still stands. The hotel is basic but very comfortable and the fresh seafood was excellent.

Bystander

A few kilometres east of Ayios Philon is another ancient site, the old Roman town of Aphendrika. According to Strabo, it was one of the 6 great cities of Cyprus but now it is reduced to three ruined churches and the badly preserved remains of some houses.
