View of the town from St. Hilarion

Girne (or Kyrenia as it is known to Greek Cypriotes) is undoubtedly the prettiest town in Cyprus. It is located on the narrow stretch of coast between the Kyrenia Mountains and the sea and had the only decent harbour along the entire north coast.

Kyrenia castle and harbour

The harbour has always been heavily fortified and the present day castle is the product of Roman, Byzantine, Lusignan and Venetian military activity.

Kyrenia. Chain Tower

The squat structure with the small pillar on top is the old chain tower, where the heavy chain used to block the harbour entrance was attached.
