We spent our first morning in Nicosia at the Cyprus Museum where many of the most notable objects from the island's cultural heritage are housed.

The house of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios is the restored 18th century residence of the dragoman of the city (the intermediary between the Ottoman government and the local population.

It is a short walk through the UN checkpoint at the Ledra Palace Hotel to North Nicosia where some of the city's most important landmarks are located. One of the most impressive is the old Ottoman caravanserai known as Büyük Han.

A caravanserai is an inn built by the local authorities for the use of visiting merchants. Today is houses the workshops and galleries of craftsmen and artists.

The old marketplace, the souk, is located right by the crossing. There you can by anything from fruit and vegetables to the latest in groovy street duds.
